FAQ

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that acts as a replacement root for a missing tooth. It's placed gently into your jawbone, where over a few months it fuses with the bone to create a strong, stable foundation. A natural-looking crown, bridge or denture is then fixed on top, giving you a replacement tooth that looks, feels and works just like your own.

How long does the dental implant process take?

It varies from person to person, but most treatments take between three and six months from start to finish. Once the implant is placed it needs time to heal and fuse with your jawbone before the final tooth is attached, and this healing stage accounts for most of the time. Some people are suitable for same-day options such as Teeth in a Day, where temporary teeth are fitted at the same visit. At your consultation we'll give you a clear timeline based on your own situation.

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel any pain while your implant is placed, just a little gentle pressure. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable it is and compare it to having a tooth removed. Any mild soreness or swelling afterwards usually settles within a few days and is easily managed with ordinary painkillers. For nervous patients we also offer intravenous sedation to help you feel completely relaxed throughout.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost depends on how many implants you need and whether any preparatory treatment, such as bone grafting, is required. As a guide, a single tooth implant with a crown starts from around £1,320, and you can see our full price list on our pricing page. We'll always give you a clear, itemised quote before any treatment begins, with no hidden surprises, and the most accurate figure will come from a consultation where we assess your individual needs.

Are dental implants covered by insurance?

Dental implants are usually a private treatment, so they aren't routinely available on the NHS except in certain medical circumstances. Some private dental insurance policies and health cash plans do contribute towards the cost, though the level of cover varies a lot between providers, so it's worth checking the details of your own policy. To make treatment easier to manage, we also offer flexible payment options, which our team is happy to talk through with you.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Caring for implants is refreshingly simple, because you look after them just like your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, clean between them daily with floss or interdental brushes, and keep up with your regular check-ups and hygienist visits. With good everyday care, your implants and gums will stay healthy for many years. Once your treatment is complete we'll show you exactly how to look after your new teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

With good care, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. The titanium post fuses permanently with your jawbone, and success rates remain very high over many years. The crown or restoration on top may show some wear and need replacing after around 10 to 15 years, much like any other dental work, but the implant itself should serve you well for decades. Looking after your implants and attending regular check-ups is the best way to keep them going.
